Oil on masonite impressionist mountain landscape, 24" by 30", unframed, signed at lower right by artist EVERETTE H. SLOAN. This is a painting in the tradition of the great early 20th century New Mexican art of the Southwest.....the yellow aspen, the massive mountains, the colors. The mountain ridges, especially, remind me of the work of Taos artist Victor Higgins. Strangely, I can find nothing on Everette Sloan by searching the net. On the reverse, inside a drawn palette, is written, by the artist: "Painted on the spot near Cowles, New Mexico/IF YOU EVER GO THERE--REMEMBER THE ARTIST TO MR JAKE GREEN---MANAGER OF THE STORE IN 1961". So, that helps us to date the painting. The painting is unframed currently. It is a little dusty and there are a few minor paint losses (ask for details of this), but the paint is NOT unstable. I think cleaned and varnished and framed, this will really take off. Note the deer in the composition. I wonder if the Museum of New Mexico has anything in its files on the artist.
