CARLETON WILLIAMS listed California art 1941 semi abstract still life painting

Oil on canvasboard painting of what appear to be stylized modern images of plants and flowers, 15 3/4" by 11 7/8", signed at lower right "CARLETON WILLIAMS" and dated "41". The painting is very modern, with black outlines a prominent part of the complex composition. I have looked online to find information on the artist but the only information I've found is the listing in Hughes "Artists in California 1786-1940". The short listing says that he exhibited at the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles in 1938. I would entertain the possibility that the artist was African-American.
