Impressively large framed oil on canvas of a beach with a distant sailing ship, and a few sea gulls in foreground, 18" by 36", (28 1/2" by 47" as framed), undated, signed at lower left "W. AYERST INGRAM". This is an impressionistic and very subtle work that would be very easy to live with for a long time. The artist was born in Scotland but painted a lot in Cornwall and southern England around Falmouth. He was quite well regarded in Victorian times, having been a member of many English art society organizations. Ingram supported Whistler in his struggle to remain president of the Royal Society of British Artists. Ingram is considered to have been a founder of the Newlyn School in Cornwall. Today he is recognized as a talented painter of marine scenes in oil and watercolor, but he also painted widely varying subject matter in the course of his extensive travels. This painting has some condition issues, most notably at left, where an area of about 5" by 2" is flaking and missing paint! It needs to be stabilized and inpainted. There is one other small loss area, in the ball of the sun, and a small dimple that doesn't go all the way through. The original frame has a few losses of the gold gesso in corners and at edges mainly. There's an old Montreal framer's label on the frame, so the painting apparently spent some time in Canada. Please do email me for more details and photos. Due to the size of the painting, shipping to Europe would be costly; shipping in the states would likely require professional packing. So, contact me to discuss shipping estimates. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER FINE PAINTINGS AND PRINTS IN MY RUBY LANE SHOP.
