Watercolor on paper of Olvera Street and the top of City Hall in downtown Los Angeles, 22" by 16 1/2" (29" by 23" as framed), signed at lower right "Stark". I am not sure which "Stark" this might be, as there are two listed in Hughes that might fit---an "Elizabeth Lee Lowe Stark" (1886-1963) and a "Jack Gage Stark" (1882-1950). Whoever the artist, he or she was skilled in the use of the notoriously difficult medium known as watercolor! You can feel the palms blowing, hear the Mexican at lower right playing his stringed instrument. This is a fine example of the "California Scene" in watercolor. Emil Kosa, Jr. painted at the time in and around downtown Los Angeles, and some of those works have brought into five figures. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
