Pencil accented with white and gray-blue gouache painting, 7 7/8" by 8 1/4" (12 3/8" by 12 3/8" as framed), signed at lower right by well listed early 19th century French artist PIERRE NOLASQUE BERGERET. This is a typical work for the artist, who specialized in historical scenes, often depicting European royalty. There are auction records for oils to over $10,000. This piece is paper laid many decades ago on another piece of heavy paper/light board. Most of the photos were taken with this removed from the frame. The frame is attractive and picks up on the colors in the drawing. Condition overall is good, with a 3/4" old tear at extreme lower left, which looks like a white crack below the man at left; and, it appears that the artist joined two pieces of paper to make the drawing---at top upon close inspection one can see what at first appears as a horizontal pencil line, but which is in fact the place where the top 3/4" meets the rest of the drawing. This much have been done by the artist himself as the work above that perfectly matches the rest of the drawing in both technique and color. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER FINE WORKS IN MY SHOP.
