This is a painting in gouache and watercolor, 16 1/2" by 24 3/4" painting itself (23" by 31" as framed), showing the clipper ship "Excelsior" in stormy waters, signed at lower left by noted and auctioned Australian maritime artist ARTHUR VICTOR GREGORY (1867-1957). Gregory's works sell regularly at Leonard Joel auctions in Melbourne and in London at Christie's South Kensington. The present example is dated 1894. The work is presently without glass, so it has picked up some condition problems over the past century plus. If you look closely there are a few scuffs and water stains in the sky and at left and it appears that the paint itself has oxidized and penetrated the paper itself. Condition could be better but rematted, framed and seen from a normal viewing distance, this would still appear as a very nice nineteenth century painting of a clipper ship.
