Watercolor on paper creekside mountain landscape with two figures, 7" by 11 1/8" (16 1/2" by 22 1/4" as framed) signed at lower left with the initials "F De. B. R." and dated either 1843 or 1863. This is a work by the listed American artist FREDERICK DeBOURG RICHARDS (1822-1903). Oil paintings by the artist have sold to as high as $35,000 at major New York auctions. He is most associated with the Delaware/Philadelphia area, but also worked in the American west and in Europe. According to the Samuels listing, he was in New York from 1844-45, in Philadelphia from 1845-1866, in Italy in the 1850's, and in Paris by 1868. Richards exhibited at the National Academy, the Brooklyn Art Association, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Boston Art Club. His style in the oil paintings could be described as frequently in the Hudson River/Luminism fashion of the times. This work bears an inscription on the reverse framing paper, in a modern hand: "Original India Ink Drawing by E. Di Berg Richards Scene near Tamaqua, Pa.". I haven't taken this apart completely yet so perhaps the notation came from the back of the drawing. The paper has an old embossed design at lower left corner; it appears to be a crown surrounded by the apparent partial words "London Bond". Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
