Watercolor on paper (12 1/4" by 17 7/8"--19" by 24 1/2" including mat, fillet and frame) by important American artist Stephen Seymour Thomas. Born in Texas, he has been associated with that state, but Thomas also studied and painted in New York with William Merritt Chase, as well as in Paris with Constant. The artist moved to Southern California in 1915 and painted there until his death. His works are in museum collections internationally; portraits of royalty and other important figures were a specialty, and one hangs in the White House. This particular work is apparently a late work, despite the horse-drawn wagon subject matter, as "Seymour Thomas/July 1956" is written on the reverse. Signed at lower right.
