This is a PAIR of Dutch drawings on toned paper, laid on a board, each 13" by 19" plus old French matting a few inches wide, unframed, each signed at lower right "L. Verschuier 1653" in an old hand. Puzzled by the pair, I sent images to the Sotheby's New York auction house Old Master specialists. They said that the drawings were likely 18th century works for some reason bearing the signature of Lieve Pietersz Verschuier (c. 1630-1656), a 17th century important Dutch artist. That specialist did identify the barn scene as one of the tobacco drying sheds at Amersfoort, and the church tower is also an Amersfoort landmark. When I acquired the works in Massachusetts they were framed in cheap modern framing and had 20th century yellow oval labels of a Den Haag framer or gallery on the backing boards. Condition: overall browning, and there is some kind of opaque white substance in the sky of one work, resembling white out typing correction fluid; and the tobacco shed work has some wear from rubbing at upper left, appearing as a lighter area. I think properly framed these faults will be minimized and the charm of the highly detailed works will be apparent. Since I can only add nine images on Ruby, I've have been able to include enough images to show the fine detail. Feel free to ask for more detailed photos. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
