Oil on masonite painting of many Haitian traditional dancers in a street scene, not dated but likely 1960s or 1970s, unframed, measuring 24" by 32", signed at lower right "G. E. DUCASSE" and inscribed at lower center "Les Droguistes y les Drogues/BANDE MASCARON ZIZIPAN". This is a colorful work by a signficant artist from Haiti. According to online biographies, he was born in Port-au-Prince and despite natural talent for art, worked for the government for many years, in agriculture. By 1948 he was in touch with the burgeoning art scene in the capital and soon was producing fine works in the primitive unique style of Haiti. I see asking prices online up to $7,500 for the works of this artist. The condition is somewhat compromised by missing edge areas, the largest at right about 3" by 1", and another at lower left. They could be largely hidden by a frame, or could be made up. As the work was evidently exposed to moisture at one time, it has developed a curvature towards the front. This could also be addressed by a restorer. See the net for more works by the artist, who specialized in genre and historical scenes of Haiti. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
