This pastel resembles work by the most important American still life painters of the 19th century, such as Joseph Decker, Claude Raguet Hirst, or any number of members of the so-called Fall River School of Massachusetts/Rhode Island. Drawn on paperboard, cut as an octagon under the oval shaped opening, the drawing itself measuring 17" by 39", (27" by 49" as framed), and likely in its original Victorian era or early 20th century decorative frame, this is an impressive, yet very delicate work. Condition is excellent, with no foxing or moisture damage and only minimal chalk dust transfer to the glass. Having opened the back and looked underneath, I don't see any evidence of a signature. Note the old framing label on the reverse from Essex Street in downtown Salem, Massachusetts. The ornate frame has some chipping and losses on the decorative elements---see photos. Glass (allow please for the annoying reflections) is old and wavy. Due to the delicacy of the art and the frame, shipping will be something of a challenge. The work is now in Connecticut with relatives, about 45 miles from New York City. Ideally I'd like to see a buyer who can pick up the work, but, packing/shipping (professional, I think) would certainly be possible. Ask for a quote. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY SHOP.
