Wow...a pair of stunners. I believe the frame is from abalone shell which closely resembles tortoise shell. The cut brass art work pops these frames. Also, notice the ladies fine clothing...ermine, pearls, silk.... the top of society. both are signed. The lady with the pearl necklace was signed by Stieler (perhaps Joseph Karl?) and the name, Anna R. Rauler is on the back. The other was signed by Stahl and the name H. Maria V. Baycinio (? was not certain of the last 4 letters in this name). Measure 43/4" wide by 5 3/8" high. Excellent condition.

Note: All of the miniature portraits on my Ruby site are from the collection of retired New England dealer who specialized in Sèvres & Samson porcelain.
