Gorgeous Cameo Glass Egg

This beautiful Cameo Glass Egg is truly amazing. I believe it was made by Gibson Glass but I am not certain. Cameo Glass was first made by selecting two compatible piece of glass. These two pieces of glass would be blown one layer over the other. Then the artist would trace on the design and cover the area that was to remain with beeswax or some other acid resistant substance. The vessel would be dipped into acid, which would eat the top layer away revealing the bottom layer of glass with the protected second layer remaining giving the piece a lovely 3 dimensional appearance. This egg has been done in much the same way only a rubber coating was used to protect the design area and the remaining top layer was sandblasted away and then polished to give it a smooth appearance.

The base of this egg is a crystal clear glass which has been overlaid with a turquoise satin glass. Then it has what is know as a reverse sand blasting where the larger portion of the egg has been covered leaving the branch design exposed. The turquoise outer layer was blasted away exposing the crystal clear glass underneath. This glass is so clear that you can see completely through the egg to the other side. In fact in pictures 3 and 4 you can see portions of the trees shine through the glass. I must have taken 40 pictures of this egg to come up with 4 mainly because I was trying to get a picture directly on so you could see into the egg but the clear glass just flashed back and I could only get a bounce side shot.

This egg is an excellent example of craftsmanship and will be a wonderful addition to any egg or cameo glass collection.
