Animal subjects are among the most rare of all Limoges pieces but I've never been very impressed by pictures of these subjects until now. Turns out this pup's pedigree explains why he's more appealing than most of the book examples I've seen . . . this fully hand painted 10 by 9 1/2 inch plaque from the Flambeau (LDBC) firm is signed by noted artist Luc. The dog's face is depicted in great detail and he looks pensive and intelligent rather than "cute." This is what an "uncut" poodle looked like, circa 1900 or so.

The plaque is in excellent and original condition with VERY minor gilt and paint loss, see close-up for a scratch on the background color and a small spot of missing gilt, the gilt border is otherwise in remarkable condition for the age of this piece. There's a small rough spot on the left-hand rim edge but it's not a flaw and doesn't look like a repair, I suspect it occurred in manufacturing.

Flambeau Marks 1 and 5 in green date the plaque to no later than 1914, perhaps early 1900s. See photo of marks which also shows factory drilled hole for hanging.
