I don’t often buy saucers without cups, for obvious reasons; but this gem cries out for a rescue! There are three hand painted cartouches of varied landscape scenes against a deep claret background; these show wear, especially under magnification, but pretty anyway to the naked eye, and gilt embellishments make for a very fancy effect indeed. The reference books show some similar professional examples, and this amateur effort on a very old Haviland blank (1888—1896) may have been an attempt to copy something similar from a Limoges studio professional painter.
The saucer measures six inches across on a fancy blank, and the inner well flat portion is two inches in diameter . . . for anyone lucky enough to have a cup that may match! Signed on the reverse, in gilt, “M.T.B.”
