One of the most interesting things about the artist Jennings, a North Dakota painter who worked in the early 1900s, is her distinctive use of gilt borders to enhance the beauty of her china painting. Here she has embellished the curving, irregular gilt border with hand applied black curlicues. She uses a range of green shades from near-black to pale mint to set off the range of pinks in the flowers and the greens are more reminiscent of the sea than anything one might find in a garden. Jennings (first name unknown to me) was an early North Dakota china painter said to have studied in Chicago with Aulich. Some of her work was sold through Ogden, Merrill, and Greer, a St. Paul department store and catalog company. Her work is unusual in its composition and here, in the use of an almost filtered effect in her background colors.
