This one a fantastic Tiffany soup ladle that was a wedding present to a neighbor's grandmother in the late 19thC. The pattern has an illustrious history. The book 'Tiffany Silver Flatware' follows the progression of Tiffany's involvement in the manufacture of flatware from its inception (in 1851 by the Moore Co (exclusively for Tiffany's) until 1868 when the companies merged and increased production from occasional specialty pieces of flatware to full lines. This pattern called Tiffany was designed by Edward C Moore and introduced when patented in 1869. It bears the exalted 'M' in a lozenge and Tiffany & Co, Sterling and Pat. 1869. The pattern description on p.171 of the Tiffany book describes its style as Renaissance Revival but admits to it being more restrained than typical of that period. Called Tiffany's Pattern No. 1, it was their first full-line which, tho Moore 'probably wanted to follow the prevailing trend.... preferred to be more conservative in his inaugural design'. The design for Tiffany was described as a modified Greek double-scroll with a large open area for initials (in this case, the letter R). The description also notes that at the junction of the terminal and stem, a simple honeysuckle blossom rises from leaves which flare outward to form small knobs on each side. Around 1890 the die was recut resulting in a deeper design and a more rounded tip on the handle. This soup ladle has the more rounded tip. It is a heavy weight sterling and made with the exemplary workmanship we've come to rely on from Tiffany. It has been in a closet in a box since the 1960s...in excellent condition, tho it could use a polish. It is a gorgeous pattern and stayed popular until 1934 when it was designated inactive. Measuring 12 3/4"L, the beautifully shaped and fluted bowl measures 4 1/2"w X 3 5/8"d. An interesting dating tool to note: Tiffany reintroduced the pattern in 1956 with the omission of the aforementioned 'knobs' and called the pattern The Beekman. Thus any of this pattern having the 'knobs' are pre-1934 and called Tiffany Pattern No. 1 and those without knobs are dated after 1956 and called The Beekman.
