A wonderful Wood & Hughes sterling ladle made for a store named, ? E Dickinson (the first initial indecipherable). Wood & Hughes of New York City is one of the most prestigious and renowned silversmiths of the 19thC. They struggled for survival thru the Civil War and then again after suffering the loss of their patterns in a disastrous fire in 1891. This last, might be the reason I cannot find the official name for the pattern of this beautiful sauce/gravy ladle with a wide gilded square bowl with its handle having a finely engraved shaft of wheat. Measuring 6 1/2", the bowl is 2 1/8" square; 5/8" deep and signed sterling. It is heavyweight, as one would expect from a fine old firm. Exceptional addition to a quality silver collection.
