I love both glass and crystal but know there is a difference. Glass, around for over 2,000 years, is commonly made of 70% silica sand, 10% limestone, and 20% soda ash. In the mid 17th century lead oxide was added to add weight, luster and clarity to the common formula. Lead oxide also softens the glass, allowing it to be hand cut with diamond tipped wheels to create a diamond-like brilliance. Full lead crystal has at least 24% lead oxide content, with the maximum being 33%. This Polish-made basket has the original "Crystal Clear" label indicating the 24% lead oxide content.
The reflection of light bursts from the molded pattern creating a sparkle that catches the eye in any ambient light. This substantial piece would be a treasured addition to any fine glass or crystal collection.
