This interesting spoon measures 5 & 5/8" long. It is marked Sterling and has a pre-1920 Gorham Trademark. Further it has a patent date of 1892. The bowl has a handsome rendering " titled Williston Church Feb 2nd 1881 Portland ME ". The first Christian Endeavor group was organized on February 2, 1881, in the Williston Congregational Church, Portland, Maine, U.S.A., under the leadership of the pastor, Francis E. Clark, and his wife Harriet. The guiding principles of Christian Endeavor as expressed by Francis E. Clark, the founder of the movement, have remained constant to this day: Confession of Christ, Service for Christ, Loyalty to Christ’s Church, Fellowship with Christ’s People.
The Reverend F.E. Clark founded a Young People 's Society for Christian Endeavor (Y.P.S.C.E.). Clark's idea spread throughout Congregational churches and into other denominations as well. Between 1881 and 1889 some thirty-eight Christian Endeavor Societies were founded in Universalist Churches."
