Genuine Vintage Fisher Marten Fur (The American Sable) Short Coat, Size Medium

I purchased this gorgeous coat at an Estate Auction and was fortunate enough to be able to talk with the previous owner of the coat. It was purchased from a Furrier in New York City, around 1940. The designer label is missing, but it was made by “Janet Furs of Great Neck, Long Island.” The owner also said that the fur is “Fisher Marten” which is the cousin of the Russian Sable.

After inspection of this beautiful coat, I did find a label sewn into the seam of one of the side pockets… “Fur Label Authority Consumer Protection, Manufactured Under Fair Labor Standard.” This label is required under Federal Trade Commission laws for furs manufactured, imported and sold in the USA.

In researching, I found that the Fisher Marten’s habitat is in Northern, North America and Canada. Also, the fur ranges from brown to black and they have soft, silky pelts and the fur is very durable. That description is identical to this coat… It is very soft and has a beautiful silky luster. The color is a Chocolate Brown… Mainly Black with highlights of Brown.

As far as durability, what can I say… this coat is going on 70-years old and it is Excellent Condition. The Quality is outstanding. The luxurious satin lining is a light brown with embroidered designs throughout, and there are no stains! This, in itself is very rare, as you almost always see underarm stains in a coat of this age.

As a last inspection, I gently pulled a couple of stitches in the lining, so that I could make certain the backing was a genuine fur pelt and it is. I will leave those stitches loose so that you can see for yourself, or I will reinforce them back as they were… just please let me know.

The coat has a collar, but it is not sewn separately… it melds down with the opening of the coat. It does not have buttons or clasp... It is made so that the coat lies nicely against the body... almost as if there were buttons. There are hidden side pockets. It is 24” Long… the Bust measures at 40”, and the arm length is 22.”

This coat is truly a treasured find. I guarantee you will be very pleased with it.
