A stunning card case, made in the Vizagapatam region of British India, c.1860, for sale to the British market. The case has a sandalwood carcass veneered in horn, with ivory strapping and fretwork. At the center of one side of the case is an ivory inlay that is incised and lac filled, depicting what appears to me to be Garuda. On the other side is a plain inlay, without incising. The case is ample size, measuring approximately 4.5 by 3.3”, and can easily accommodate today’s business cards.

All beads and strapping are intact, and there is only the most minimal loss of fretwork, discernible only on careful inspection for symmetry.

Thanks for visiting
