Stunning papier mache box, c.1860. The top is constructed of a scalloped, slightly rounded form, finely decorated with mother of pearl, painted floral designs and attractive gilding. The mother of pearl escutcheon houses a tasselled key which does not turn the lock. It is lined under the lid with the original purple velvet and relined inside with hand marbled paper. The box measures 7.0" by 5.5" and is 2.5" high.

There is very slight crazing to the escutcheon area; otherwise the condition is perfect.
