Magnificent mid-19th century workbox, made in the Galle District of Ceylon. The box itself is made of beautiful coromandel wood with undulating sides that lend a striking finish to the box. The interior of the lid has a large floral inlay in ivory, stained ivory, and incised ivory with lac fill. The top tray has a variety of ivory, shell and ebony lidded compartments and sectioned slots for cotton reels all with silver fittings. Even the ivory and shell cotton reels are still there, including the original silk tape measure. The lower tray has section dividers. There is no key. It measures 16.5" wide by 11.5" deep and is 6.25" high.
Every part of the workbox has been made using the finest materials available, and it is in extraordinary condition for its age. For the sake of completeness, a couple of issues should be noted. There is evidence that there were once additional lids, in the center compartment of the upper tray and to the left and right of it. Also, there is a slight crack at the base of the lower tray of the box between the dividers, visible in one of the pictures. A screw is missing to the lock, and when the lid is closed it sticks slightly; care must be taken in opening the box.
But these are quibbles in a near museum-quality item. The piece is absolutely stunning.
