The production of faience, (tin glazed earthenware) in Nancy France was commercially successful for Emile Galle. This is due largely because of Galle’s level of interest and involvement working with both designers and artisans, and honing them into an effective working team. Decorative motifs were designed by Galle, and sometimes his pupils-but, virtually all were inspired by and exhibit impetus deeply rooted in nature.
Galle's level of commitment to his art is what makes his faience sought-after today by collectors the world over. This charming cup and saucer is one such example how Galle’s penchant for nature transects the lines of utility and art.
Botanical sprays randomly envelope the softly corseted cup and the saucer with raised flourish motif. A peaceful countryside reflected in a quiet waterway decorates one side of the cup. The handcrafted ribbon-like handle in a blush pink-gold matches the pink-gold glaze of the cup’s opening and saucer’s edge.
No chips, cracks or restoration. Wear to gold on cup and saucer. Cup is approximately 3-1/2” tall. Saucer diameter is approximately 6”. Both pieces marked E G Depose and the cross of Lorraine.
