It is hard to imagine that the glass line Durand Art Glass named “Lady Gay Rose” was unpopular when it was introduced to the public in the mid 1920’s. Especially, when looking at this fine variation- with it’s deep raspberry red glass in the interior of the vessel.

In the book, “Durand – The Man and His Glass” by Edward J. Meschi, this particular form is referred to as “Hard Ribbed” for its vertical ribs evenly spaced across the surface of the glass. This example with an exceedingly rare Lady Gay Rose interior, has an opal glass base (which was often used by Durand in the production of fancy glass) and is cased in an iridescent ambergris crystal outer layer.

It is this outer layer of iridescent ambergris crystal that forms the “hard ribbed” design. All the complicated technique was certainly worth the trouble because the effect is stunning!

We are not certain if this started out as a vase (which was drilled), or if this was intended to be a touchier shade, but the pictures show the neatly drilled and finished hole – you will have to decide for yourself.

Stands approximately 9” tall x 8” wide. Condition is good except for the hole drilled in bottom as described above, and two scuffs to the iridescent crystal outer layer near the bottom of the base. One is approximately 1” long and the other is about 1/8” long. We will try to show these in a photo.
