The finish looks original and the color has a rich patina. The chest is missing the catch that hold the square door in the center closed, but all the other hardware is intact and appears original. At the top of mirror, (see picture) a small piece of the foliate tip on the right-hand side is missing. At the bottom of the mirror, the right-hand corner molding is missing, (see picture). Both of these problems are minor and can easily be remedied in the hands of a competent restorer. The original beveled mirror is in very good condition. Other than the minor problems I’ve described, all this lovely case piece needs is a good paste wax, and a good home.
If you are a collector of American Oak furniture this is a unique opportunity to own a substantial, well designed and constructed form of golden quarter sawn oak.
Recently we did find a much simpler, very plain and smaller version of this (called a cheval mirrored lingerie chest) offered on another site for $2,950.00
