19th Century gold gilt glass Attar perfume scent bottle
Antique free blown glass perfume or scent bottle with impressed ovals and "X"'s and gold gilt. The bottle body is 4 sided, the neck is 6 sided. The bottle measures 1/2" wide and 5 1/4" long not including the original ground glass stopper. This type of bottle was used in the 19th century by perfume makers in Oxfordshire, the lavender growing area of England. They were known to be used to go to carry perfume purchased to refill precious perfume bottles left at home, kind of surprising since they hold so little perfume. Some of the nicknames for this style perfume bottle are Attar, Oxford Lavender, throw away, and vial of tears bottles. This bottle has loss of gold gilt throughout as shown. There are a couple of very tiny flea bites at the opening of the bottle, otherwise condition of the glass is good. The large looking chip at the opening of the bottle is actually a large fleck of gold gilt loss and not a chip.
