Wonderful vintage large Sairey Gamp toby jug made by Royal Doulton, England. A character from the Charles Dickens 1843 novel, "Martin Chuzzlewit," Sairey Gamp is a gossiping, often tipsy gin-drinking midwife and nurse. It is the large size jug measuring approximately 6 1/2 inches tall and 8 inches from spout to handle. There is a spout on one side and the handle is in the form of an umbrella. Sairey Gamp is impressed on the back side of the mug. The backstamp has: A lion standing on a crown, Made in England, and Royal Doulton England around a symbol. There is an 'A' beside the crown and the number 4 printed down from the backstamp. It is in great condition with no nicks, chips or cracks.
