Burley Winter is perhaps lesser know than some of its rivals in the region but the pottery they produced is becoming quite desirable and is still very affordable. These old designs are being reproduced again by members of the Burley family on the original site in Crooksville. These pieces are clearly marked "New Burley Winter" so as not to be confused with the older pieces.
This example was made in the early 1900's and while the glazing technique is quite typical of BW, the colors are rather rare. The background is creamy ivory with a sage green mottled overlay in a dead matte finish. This sounds simple enough but the look and feel of this cannot be easily described and the photos do not capture its subtle richness. It is like warm marble; opaque but with a strange translucency.
It measures 5 1/2" tall by 6 1/2" wide from handle to handle. The largest diameter of the bowl is about 5 1/2". It is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks but does show the inherent manufacturing glitches that are typical..note the 'dent' in the largest shoulder diameter. Also some stray bits of clay here and there. These bumps and pops only add to the rather rustic appeal of this piece. It is lovely. The interior is completely clean with no sign of use.
Incised with #43 on bottom.
