The size of this beautiful piece makes us question its intended purpose. It is larger than the typical dresser or powder jar and not quite large enough to be considered a biscuit container. If a label must be assigned, we will call it a candy dish.

It measures 7" from handle to handle and the body is 5 1/2" in diameter. The bowl is 3" high and total height with lid is 5 1/2". Hand painted roses in shades of pink and cobalt glaze encircle the bowl and lid and are embellished with shiny gold beading and trim. The handles, three feet and finial are cobalt.

This beautiful piece is in excellent condition; no chips, cracks or repairs. The clean interior has several small spots, a result of the firing and commonly found on this sort of thing. There is virtually no wear to the paint or glaze. The white areas on the handles were left free of the cobalt; this is not wear.

Its unmarked state indicates that this was made prior to 1890 and is clearly Japanese (Nippon).
