Large Oval Oak Hinged Lid Box with Hand Painted Florals

This beautiful oval shaped box is quite large measuring 16 1/2" by 12 1/2" at the bottom and tapering to 14 1/2" by 12" at the top. The height is 6 1/2" and the weight is slightly over 5 pounds. We have shown it with a soda can in the last picture for size reference but even that does not seem to illustrate its large size.

Made of solid oak in a barrel form with the thick vertical staves held together with bent wood hoops which interlace at the front in a technique which we have seen on tine boxes from Sweden.

The two-piece lid is 1" thick and hinged with two black wrought iron strap hinges and features a lovely bouquet of multi-colored flowers hand painted in a folk art manner. The stationary part of the lid and front of the box are gracefully embellished with hearts and scrolls in ivory and brown.

The intended purpose of this is rather a mystery and the loose piece of black velvet made to fit the bottom only adds to the puzzle. It appears to be original to the piece and not home made. Of course we do not have to assign a purpose and we can imagine lots of uses for this large and lovely box.

It is in excellent condition with no major damage..just a few dings here and there and some plating loss on one of the hinges.
