Roycroft Inkwell, Hammered Copper with Old Brass Finish

This beautiful Arts and Crafts style inkwell was made by the Roycroft Copper Shop and the early "orb and cross" mark dates it from 1906 to 1910. Made of finely hammered copper and plated in brass, it measures just shy of 3" square on the base and hinged lid. The panels taper to 2 1/2" square at the top of the base. The sides of the clear glass well also taper and its 1 1/2" diameter shoulder rests on the internal platform.

This has been polished in the past. There was much white residue in the etchings and having not seen this particular example we thought that this was enamel or polychrome. A soft brushing has removed it. We realize that this condition may not be agreeable to certain collectors but there is nothing to be done for it except wait another 100 years.

The high quality of the Roycrofters is evident and this is still sound and square. There is some shallow bending on the lip of the lid which is shown in the close-ups. Also a 1/4" long scratch on the lid and some very minor pitting. The copper shows through on the high points of the floriform design and several other small areas. Please ask for more photos as I am limited here. The glass well is in excellent condition with no chips. Please note the hinge area. There is some exposed solder which could indicate a repair. The hinge is tight with no wobble.
