Small Paper-Covered Dresser Box in "Shabby Chic" Condition

These boxes were in vogue around the turn of the century and were made to contain personal items such as hankies, gloves or jewelry. Some came fitted with manicure sets and shaving implements. Often they were covered with a layer of celluloid to protect the fragile boxes and paper covering.

The unusual appeal of this example made us relax our usual condition standards. It is a charming small size for one thing, measuring about 5 1/4" square by 2 1/2" tall. The lovely Victorian print features a beguiling lady in period dress surrounded by a bower of pink roses and blue forget-me-nots. The interior is upholstered in rose colored pleated silk.

This box was not covered with celluloid which could account for the rather extensive chipping of the paper. All edges show this and there is a loss on the lid to the left of the portrait. The pressed tin hinges and clasp are present and functional but have lost their original (probably brass plated) finish. The interior fabric is in good condition but is spotted and soiled.

I will have to let the charm of this piece speak for itself and set the price low to accommodate for its condition.
