This was made by Somers Bros. of Brooklyn, N.Y. who were in business from 1869-1920 and manufactured tin products, mainly for use by other companies. We have seen pill and typewriter ribbon boxes made by this company. They developed their own lithography process in 1879 and the printing on this could be an example of this process. What is left is thick and has an orange-peel texture.
This plaque shaped holder was made to mount on the wall with holes on top and bottom. It measures 7" by 4". Classic design elements typical of the Victorian era..lots of scrolls and geegaws and featuring two Grecian women in alcoves on either side of the match box.
The photos provide a good illustration of the condition; considerable wear to the litho and several small spots of loss. No major bending and structurally sound. The box is attached to the plate with 4 bent metal tabs.
This is eligible for First Class shipping if desired..sometimes slower but considerably less expensive than Priority Mail.
