Pre-Christmas Doll Sale this Month! $25 Off & Free Shipping on all Ginny Dolls.
This piece was made around the turn of the century by Bradley & Hubbard, a company noted for producing metal goods of high quality and artistic merit. The back shows their molded-in B&H mark and also the numbers 350 and 3509.
The base metal is iron; cast into an ornate Rococo design of vines, scrolls and grape clusters. The figurehead represents Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and all the fun that goes with it. The beveled mirror in completely encased by a tin plate on the reverse side which is screwed to the iron.
The overall dimensions are 15" by 10" and it protrudes from the wall about 7 1/2". The mirror measures 5" by 8". The candle holder, drip cup and arm assembly are screwed together and attached to the frame with a flat head screw. The small holes around the edge of the drip cup originally held glass prisms. These are long gone but replacements are easily obtained if desired. We actually prefer it without these accessories. The holes are small and appear to be part of the design.
The condition of the metal is excellent with no breaks or bends. We have mentioned that this has been polished and we stopped short of removing all the patina but it does look as though the plating has worn off on areas on the figure's head. The mirror is not quite as bad as it appears in the photos but is not great. There are light scratches on the glass surface and the silvering beneath is foggy with some spider lines around the edge. It is fully functional as a mirror. Sturdy ring on the back for wall mounting. The last photo shows another option for this with the candle holder removed (note the small hole at the bottom center).
