This beautiful tray measures 18" from handle to handle and is 12 1/2" wide with a 3/4" lip. A spray of stylized pink roses and other florals in gold and blue sits on a ochre background and is surrounded by a black cartouche embellished with gold scrollwork. Smaller bouquets are sprinkled around the inside of the curving lip and onto the handles.

This was made of molded paper or papier mache. All of the scrolled areas are slightly raised and this was accomplished with the mold. It was then hand painted and covered with a protective layer of shellac.

This example is in very nice condition with no wear of flaws to the painting but some chipping on the outer orange ring. I have shown the worst of these areas in the close-up photos. There are also some manufacturing glitches..the spot on the back shown in the picture and some runs in the shellac.

Stamped on the back; "No 7526, Hand Painted, Alcohol proof, D.T.C.O." and another stamp reading; "Alcohol Proof, Made in Japan, Patent No. 67976" This patent dates to 1899 but I do not think that this piece is that old. This is probably the patent for the manufacturing process and not this particular item. I would put a date of 1920ish on this.
