Gorgeous Pin Up Girl Painting, Oil on 12" by 16" Canvas in Lovely Carved Wood Frame

This beautiful painting was originally mounted on a 14" by 18" stretcher and had some rather severe damage in the lower corner (this is shown in the 'before' picture). The artist whom we consulted said that the nature and condition of the paint made restoration difficult. The paint was thinly applied and subject to 'powdering'. Our solution was to have the damaged area cut off and the painting re-mounted on a smaller stretcher. The artist also cleaned it and applied a thin coat of sealer and we are very happy with the results.

The monotone beige shades of the background, hair and filmy wrap emphasize the colors of the woman's striking face; wide blue eyes and rosy cheeks and lips. The expression is both flirtatious and innocent. Her makeup and hair style are that of a flapper or pinup girl from the 20's or 30's and whether this was painted at this time is unknown as it has no markings or signature. The style and condition of the canvas tells us that it is not a contemporary painting. There is no paint loss but some cracking is noticed on close inspection. The paint has been thinly applied with no impasto and the texture of the canvas can be felt although it is not as 'grainy' as the photos show. The gilded wooden frame is in excellent condition and the gold is a nice compliment to the beige tones of the painting. It is not new but probably not as old as the painting. The stretcher is 12" by 16" and overall size is 16" by 20" by about 2" thick. The back has been covered with brown paper and it is ready to hang. Better photos coming soon!
