This beautiful tray measures 18" from handle to handle and is 12 1/2" wide with a 3/4" lip. A spray of stylized pink roses and other florals in gold and blue sits on a ochre background and is surrounded by a black cartouche embellished with gold scrollwork. Research tells us that this ancient musical instrument is know in many cultures by many names and that the term "Jew's Harp" has no particular connection with the Jewish people or Judaism but is probably a corruption of 'juice' or 'jaw' or possibly the French phrase 'Jeu-trompe', or toy trumpet. This example was made by the Stearns Mfg. Inc. of cold-rolled steel with a spring steel reed or 'twanger' and measures about 4" long. "Made in U.S.A." stamped in side. These two old dish towels are odd. Perhaps the appliqued designs were intended to represent silhouettes but to our eyes they resemble the figures we have seen on mourning samplers. They are made of linen and quite large, measuring 26" by 17". The plain end is hand hemmed, the embroidered end is bordered with mint green on one, lavender on the other.
