Goodoletom, the place where "Rarity is Common", is very pleased to offer for your consideration this handsome piece of coin based jewelry, a man's tie tac made from a Type 1 gold American dollar.

Between 1849 and 1889, the US mint made three attempts at making gold dollar coins for circulation. There were major problems with the first two varieties. The type 1 was tiny and people complained that because of its small size it was easily lost; the type 2 was larger but the engraving wore down too quickly in circulation. The type 3 or "Indian Princess" dollar was much more successful and was minted and used between 1856 and 1889.

Our piece of jewelry is made from a Type 1 coin which was in use between 1849 and 1854. The obverse side of the coin was buffed down and engraved with a coat of arms and fancy script. Jewelry like this was often presented as a love token from a wife or girlfriend to her significant other.

The coin measures 13 millimeters in diameter, has a left facing Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies and has a reeded edge. The coins were 900 parts pure gold alloyed with 100 parts copper. The tie tac measures 2 3/8 inches long, 9/16 inch (13 millimeters) wide and weighs 1.9 grams.
