Desirable Collectibles gathered for you from throughout Old New England
Just try to imagine lifting and pushing 7-3/4 hot pounds right out of the fireplace. Can you say "ouch?" Well, that's just what our primitive Flat Iron made by Queen weighs. It is 6-1/2" tall and 4" at its widest. The handle, also made of cast iron, is 4-1/2" long and 3" high.
At one time, it was black in color, however, someone painted the Iron gold, but most of the gold has worn off, giving the Flat Iron a very "antiqued" look.
Flat Irons were also known as "Sad Irons," not because of the very real sadness I would feel if I were the person doing the ironing with one of these torturous lumps of cast iron, but because the old English word "sadd" meant "heavy." Can you say "understatement?"
Thank goodness we can use these very old and dear implements of our past in all sorts of other creative ways: use as a charming door stop; dress up a pretty planter; or group with other age old collectibles of the past. However, you choose to show off this wonderful old part of our past, I am sure you will enjoy it for many generations to come.
