This is a beautiful Victorian oriental floral designed plate made in the late 19th century. The plate displays a china garden with pagoda.

The plate has a square shape and is about 9 inches by 9 inches.

The item is in very nice condition with normal minor crazing. There are some paint flakes missing and yellowing of the porcelain under the glazing from aging.

The base of the plate is marked MASON’S, PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA, ENGLAND.

Charles James Mason patented first Ironstone china in 1813 in Staffordshire, England. Mason’s Ironstone china was improved china, as it was harder than earthenware and stronger than porcelain.

Mason’s patent lasted only fourteen years. By 1827 other potters experimented with Mason’s Ironstone china formula.

The English potters discovered that American and Canadian markets preferred this plain and durable china. In the late 1850’s and 1860’s huge quantities of china were sold to an American agricultural communities.

Not many plain Ironstone china pieces could be found in England until just recently.

One of the staff members of the Stoke-on-Trent Museum purchased several pieces while he visited the U. S. These pieces are displayed in the Museum now.

As you continue to browse through Tom's Treasures, watch for other matching pieces of Mason’s Ironstone china, which are also listed.
