FEATURED NEW ENGLAND ARTIST BIO
Louis Kinney Harlow (1850-1913)

The Chromolithography of Louis Prang
Katherine Morrison McClinton, 1973

The following is a quote from a letter of Henry M. Downey, assistant superintendent of the Taber-Prang Art Company "The Prang Company was nothing but a strictly lithographic plant. They did a large commercial business in making lithographs." Although Mr. Downey was prejudiced in behalf of Taber, the catalogues of the combined companies continued to list a large number of Prang chromos, including the long narrow New England Landscapes of Louis K. Harlow.

Haunts of the Poets: A delightful series of booklets, illustrated in monochrome and pen drawings by Louis K. Harlow, giving glimpses of places made famous and interesting association with the lives of the poets and authors representing their birthplace, later residences, quiet nooks and interesting places, these include: Haunts of Longfellow, Haunts of Emerson, Haunts of Holmes, Haunts of Bryant, Haunts of Whittier and Haunts of Hawthorne.

In 1882, Prang formed the Prang Educational Company ... Mary Dana Hicks was the director and editor of all publications ... including Studies in Composition and Color by Louis K. Harlow ... Mrs. Hicks wrote many books on teaching the industrial arts and her manuals were published by L. Prang and Company were widely used.

L. Prang and Company continued to issue new landscape chromos of New England throughout the years. A new series was listed in the catalogue of 1888-1889 by the artist, Louis K. Harlow who did many paintings and designs for Prang. This series includes: Scenes of Castine, Maine, Near Boothbay Harbor, Early Morning, Evening Twilight, A Bit of Monhegan, Maine and a Glimpse of the Sound, Connecticut.

A series of English scenes from watercolors by Louis K. Harlow were listed in the Holiday Catalogue of 1888-1889. The pictures were lithographed on satin and were 20" x 15 3/4" mounted on mats "for framing or for an easel". These subjects included: West Gate, Warwick, Stratford on Avon, Kenilworth Castle, The Old Bridge at Stratford, From the Ferry, Holy Trinity Church at Stratford, Anne Hathaway's Cottage and The Shakespeare House.

Louis K. Harlow also worked on special series booklets and calendars. Harlow painted the Evangeline scenes of Shakespeare country and a series of pictures of California Missions. Harlow also painted many New England scenes and was one of the artists most represented in Prang's publications.

Rediscovering Newton Artist (1850-1950)
Newton Historical Museum at the Jackson Homestead
Newton, Massachusetts

Born in Wareham, Massachusetts, Louis Kinney Harlow was familiar with Martha's Vineyard, which he painted in 1875. Although his later works are very different in style, coastal scenes were a favorite theme. Harlow is perhaps best known for his work as an illustrator and as an artist for the Prang Company, which produced a vast selection of chromolithographs that popularized the works of many late-nineteenth-century artists.

Harlow began his career as a professional artist in 1880 and exhibited with the Boston Art Club in 1883, 1885, 1887, and 1894. He traveled to England, Paris, and Holland to study the work of the masters. Harlow exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Jordan Art Gallery (located in the Jordan Marsh Company), and at the Newton Club in Newtonville, Massachusetts where in 1895 and 1896 he helped put on three important art shows. Working with Newton Mayor Henry B. Cobb, who was said to be an art connoisseur, Harlow solicited works from a number of well known American artists and from expatriates such as Edwin Lord Weeks. The shows rivaled those of some of the best Boston art clubs and were serious efforts to offer the public a chance to enjoy art as well as to provide artists with an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work.

Louis K. Harlow's work is represented in the collections of the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York: The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff, Alberta and The Hallmark Historical Collection.
