The serial number 3332637 dates this pocket watch to 1887. This open face watch is unusually heavy, weighing in at 5 ounces or 142.85 grams and is 3/4" thick! It has it's original thick crystal with minor wear considering it's age (a few small scratches and a tiny (pin head size) chip on the edge. The blue spade hands have delicate decorative cut outs. The ceramic face is double sunk with Roman numerals. There are no cracks or hairlines on the clean face, (just one very small chip at the edge near the numeral seven that is not seen when the watch is closed). It is stem wound and set although it takes a strong hand to set it and you want to have a good grip on the watch when you pull the stem. The front and back open with off set hinges.
The gold filled case is beautifully engraved, covering the entire area with flowers, heart shape design and an area of what I think is farm buildings with fencing. There is even a little butterfly among the flowers! There are two small dings toward the edge that are lost in the design. I only noticed them when the case was opened.
The American Waltham Watch Company has always stood for quality and this watch is a fine example of their workmanship. When asked "How many distinct mechanical operations are required in order to construct one of the grade of watch movements described as an Appleton, Tracey & Co, stem-winder?" Each foreman made a list of the operations in his own department, and the startling sum total was 3,746. Now we know why they have such high standards of quality!
