The Belais Brothers in 1917 patented alloys for white gold, which were used as a substitute for platinum during and after World War I. They were considered by some, the Kings of White Gold and any item with their hallmark is highly sought after.
The jewelers box that the diamond is original to, has the name W. M Waters. My research on this jeweler lead me more to his prominent socialite wife, Madge Eastland Waters and only a mention to the fact that her husband Woody (W. M.) had a jewelry store during their marriage. But it did date the jewelry store to the early 1900's.
The Ring is still the star of this show! I took lots of pictures in hopes of catching it's true beauty, but it simply has to be seen to be appreciated. The jeweler that I took it to verified the 14Kt gold since the markings are worn. He also did an evaluation of it by sizing the stone and I had the prongs re-tipped to tighten up the stone and make it safe for another generation. His description is as follows: One ladies 14Kt white gold antique filigree style ring containing one round old European cut center diamond set low into a six prong illusion style plate with two smaller flush set trillion cut created blue sapphire accent stones on the shoulders of the ring. The diamond being H in color and .17Ct. It is a size 4 and weighs 2.3 grams. The "head" of the ring measures 3/8". This ring was an heirloom of the Dyer family whose ancestors established the city of Dyersville.
