The Queen's Jewels; The Personal Collection of Elizabeth II; by Leslie Fields; Harry Abrams, 1987

This is a book that calls to me -- every time I see it I have to have it. Not only is the collection dazzling, but to learn its history is incredible -- from Queen Victoria's favorite diamond pendant earrings to Queen Mary's Cambridge and Delhi Durbar emeralds, each item is truly larger than itself.

The book is very clean and attractive with no names or writing. There is a small bit of wrinkling to crown of jacket spine, but this is minor and there are no tears or chips. Jacket will arrive protected by brand new mylar. Book measures 9"x11-1/4" and is printed on coated paper and lavishly illustrated with 284 photographs. The jewels are in dazzling color and are interspersed with vintage photographs of a young Queen Elizabeth.

What's interesting about the book is that it provides more than a kaleidoscope of fabulous jewelry (which in itself is quite enough!). It also imparts a sense of history, of social mores, and also an overview of the ever-shifting fashions in jewelry design. The text is arranged by gemstone -- amethysts, aquamarines, coral, diamonds, emeralds, gold, pearls, pearls and diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and turquoises with one chapter on the Crown Regalia.
