Groetchen Mercury 1937 Gambling Counter Game – Excellent!
Collectibles : Coin Operated
Manufactured in 1939, this little machine is one of the nicest penny trade stimulators you will find. It operates on a penny and has 1930’s era cigarette packs on the reels. The goal is to line up three of a kind and the machine will spit out a token at the lower right side good for a free pack of cigarettes.
During the 30’s and 40’s counter games, smaller machines that didn't pay off in cash but looked like small slot machines right down to their reels became popular at check out counters and cigar stores all around America.
Then yet another change took place that moved the counter games even closer to slots. Some of them added token payouts to exchange for cigarettes or trade. One of the pioneer machines of this class was the Groetchen Mercury.
This Mercury is in excellent working condition. It has been repainted to match the original hammertone finish that it had when it was made 60-70 years ago. The mechanism is equipped with a slot machine type fan damper instead of a piston pump used in later machines. It has a working lock and key. The only fault you will find on this machine is that one of the reels has a bit of the label scraped off in one area. (see photos) Also, there are some tokens inside the machine but they are not original to this Mercury.
