This is a full size body mask from the Makonde tribe in Tanzania. The mask, called a Matambu, is meant to be worn at a Makonde manhood transition initiation ceremony. Ceremonial dancers would masquerade in the body mask as a sign of recognizing their adulthood. As men they would now be able to take on wives and father children. The Makonde undertook carving in the early 1900’s, and are known as master carvers in East Africa; their carvings can often be seen in museums. This item is from a 40 year collection of unusual and rare African antiquities from an estate here in Seattle.
The body mask is large measuring 23” tall and 11” wide. It is carved out of one piece of wood and decorated with traditional scarification marks. Excellent condition.
