Bookends have 3D carvings of a king and his advisor, a scholarly gentleman, in attire dating from the 1400’s to 1600’s. At least I think that would be the time frame. These bookends are not that old, I’m just trying to establish a timeframe for the clothing.
Each figure on his throne has been carved from a single piece of wood.
Notice how skillfully the legs have been carved. Legs and lower part of the body have been carved so that they stand away from the seat showing a lot of open area. Great attention to detail.
The figures, after having been carved, were then attached to the wooden base supports.
These bookends are most uncommon and will add a touch of distinction and perhaps a little whimsy to your book collection. Any reader of the classics would really enjoy and treasure these.
Wood may be mahogany. I’m not sure. Wood is heavy and of good weight.
Measurements are 7” H x 2 ½” W x 4 ¼” D approximately.
