This bulb pot is in the form of a hedgehog or porcupine. These would sit on a tray for water and bulbs, and the sprouting bulbs would grow out through the holes in the body. This is a white stoneware with smear glaze, and is finely modeled and detailed. Unmarked, I would date this to mid-nineteenth century English manufacture. The origin of this design was probably the Wedgwood version in the late eighteenth century, but these were made by other makers including Davenport, and were popular in the nineteenth century. A fun item for the flower and/or animal lover.

Size: Approximately 9.25” long, 4” wide, 5.5” high.

Condition: Excellent. No chips or repairs. Some manufacturing flaws including stress cracks and glaze issues, including stray material from kiln, and crusty area where it touched another item in kiln. Note that I try to be conservative about condition descriptions, carefully noting any flaws. Of course, with antique items, there will be some signs of usage, and/or manufacturing defects. But overall, my customers have always been pleasantly surprised upon receiving their items, and of course, I would expect a return if I happen to miss anything.

Item ID: 9903
